English Translation of Final Trio from Faust |
|
As in the novel by Gaston Leroux, Christine sings the role of Marguerite in the opera Faust by Charles Gounod. During the prison scene, Christine looks directly at Box Five, where she knows Erik is hiding, and sings to him instead of the performer playing Doctor Faust. Erik is so moved by this, he comes out of hiding and, to the suprise of the audience, begins to sing the role of Faust back to Christine. I think it is all Erik ever wanted. Within context of this movie, I think Christine needed this as well for her own redemption after she broke his heart the way she did. It is at such an extreme opposite to the Mephistopheles Phantom of the 1983 film and the demonically cursed Phantom of the 1989 film.
